Vocal ensemble Musica Ficta

Musica Ficta is a professional vocal ensemble, founded in 1996 by the Danish composer and conductor Bo Holten. His ambition has been to create an ensemble with great flexibility, ready to explore a wide range of artistic possibilities.

Bo Holten is outside Denmark best known as regular guest conductor for the BBC Singers since 1990. In 2007 he was appointed chief conductor of the Flemish Radio Choir in Bruxelles.
With Musica Ficta, he specializes in early vocal music, polyphony as well as madrigals and medieval music.
Besides early music Musica Ficta's activities spans a wide register. Interest has been focused on Danish music, culminating in the Millennium-project "1000 years of Danish music".
The rich heritage of Danish songs has been recorded in an extensive series, including CDs with songs by among others Nielsen, Gade and Weyse.

The dictionary tells us that "MUSICA FICTA" (Lat. "feigned music") refers to the practice of adding accidentals in early music in order to avoid "forbidden" harmonic and melodic intervals. The art of applying these accidentals differed greatly, not only from country to country, but from musician to musician. There was a wide open space full of interpretational possibilities.
As the number of performance directions in scores has increased - culminating in the alarmingly overelaborate Darmstadtscore - the art of personal and individualistic interpretation has diminished proportionately. The widespread misconception that the printed music actually is the music, dominates musical thinking, writing and playing today. In a wider sense, "MUSICA FICTA" points to the need to interpret any score - taking into consideration circumstances, traditions and performancepractices of any age, including our own.
